Thou seest the mountains and thinkest them firmly fixed: but they shall pass away as the clouds pass away: (such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order: for he is well acquainted with all that ye do.
(An-Naml 88. Verse)
In this verse, it is reported that the mountains are not as immobile as they appear, and are constantly on the move. This movement of the mountains causes the movement of the earth's crust on which they are located. The earth's crust floats over a layer of dense mantle.
At the beginning of the 20th century, for the first time in history, a German scientist named Alfred Wegener suggested that the Earth continents were connected when they first formed, but were then dragged in different directions, leaving as they walked away from each other. Geologists understood that 50 years after Wegener's death, he was right in the 1980s. As Wegener noted in a 1915 paper, the earth's land masses were put together about 500 million years ago, and this large mass called Pangaea was located in the South Pole. About 180 million years ago, Pangea was divided into two parts that drifted in different directions. One of these giant continents was Gondwana, which includes Africa, Australia, Antarctica and India. The second was Laurasia, which included Europe, North America and Asia, excluding India. For the 150 million years after this breakup, Gondwana and Laurasia were cut into smaller pieces. These continents, which emerged after the split of Pangaea, are constantly moving on the Earth's surface at a speed of several centimeters a year, changing the earth's sea-land ratios.
This movement of earth's crust, discovered as a result of geological research at the beginning of the 20th century, is described by scientists as follows: The top part of the shell and mantle is described as approximately 100 km thick, to sections called plates. reserved. There are six large plates and several small plates. According to the theory called Plate Tectonics, these plates move on Earth by carrying the continents and the ocean floor with them. Continental movement is measured by 1-5 cm per year. As the plates continue to move, this will make a gradual change in the geography of the Earth. For example, every year the Atlantic Ocean expands a little wider.
An important point to note here is that In the verse, Allah uses the word "tamurru" to describe the movement of the mountains. It is interesting that the term used by scientists today is "continental drift". The term used by the Qur'an and the scientists is the same. Both the Qur'an and scientists use the word "drifting" for this movement. Undoubtedly, this recently discovered scientific truth is based on superstition and myth of concepts related to the nature of the universe. It is a great miracle that it appeared in the 19th century. This is a very important sign that the Qur'an is the word of Allah.
God knows best of all.
